As well as being a active hairstylist, I also work at a Dermatology office 1 day a week as an aesthetician.
Just as much as we want to have good hair, we want to have great skin. Am I right?
The most asked question I get is “Beck, how do I fight the aging process?” No one wants to look old before their time and wrinkles don’t sound or look appealing.
There are many ways you can fight wrinkles, but the easiest and least expensive is sunscreen. If you take nothing away from this post, please take this, Wear SUNSCREEN!!! The sun is so damaging to our skin. It’s harmful rays can dramatically age your skin. (aside from the fact you can get Melanoma, Basal Cell, and Squamous Cell skin cancer, and those are nothing to mess with). But, we aren’t talking skin cancer, we are talking wrinkles.
Ever seen the picture of the truck driver who never wore sunscreen, his skin paid the price. You can see the left side (drivers side) Of his face has much more wrinkles then his right side. Just goes to show that just because your in your car doesn’t mean the sun can’t get to you. His picture is below.
So, other then sunscreen, what can you do?
Moisturizer. You need moisturizer. Think of your skin as a rubber band. The more hydrated the rubber is the more it holds it’s shape. Keep it moisturized the rubber will bounce back, stay tight, and keep its elasticity. Let the rubber dry out, it’ll crack, loose its shape, it’ll stretch out, and eventually snap. Don’t let you skin snap. Use lots and lots of moisturizer. I goop that stuff on at night.
You don’t have to spend a million bucks on moisturizer either. Neutrogena makes great products and they don’t cost an arm and a leg. Personally, I use Cerevè. Their AM cream has a full spectrum SPF in it that I put on before my makeup. Here is a line up of their products, in case you hadn’t heard of it.
I also recommend using an under eye wrinkle cream. There are so many out there. The one I personally use is Teamine. I use this eye cream because it help with under eye wrinkles AND dark circles. I have really bad dark circles and Teamin has helped tremendously!!!! They also have a concealer in their line to help prevent wrinkles even more!
Under eye wrinkles are a big fear for me. I call it the eye crinkle. Why am I scared? Because you can’t Botox, or fill that area. Once that goes, there’s not much you can do. There was a time when I thought Teamine wasn’t actually working for me, then I stumbled on one if my selfies on my phone from a while ago, and I was astounded at the difference. The shot on top was my before, the bottom was after around 10 or 15 weeks of using Teamine.
You can also use a clairisonic, using one of these every night (if not every night, then at least once a week)will not only help keep your face clean by brushing away dirt and makeup that get lodged in pores, but will also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
So, at this point I’ve talked about things you can do at home. Now we will get into things you can get done in a dermatology office, or in some cases, at your favorite spa.
Chemical peels, there are various types of peels you can get. The one I recommend most is a non-peeling peel. Which means you can get this procedure done over your lunch break or before a function and not have to worry about your face falling off. Then there is a peeling peel, like a Jesners. This will make your skin peel off. Most people plan ahead for this procedure. Like, over a long weekend, or when they don’t have to leave the house. You must make sure you stay out of the sun, wear sunscreen and a big hat if you plan to be outside for a long period of time.
What will these chemical peels help? They help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it will help lighten any sunspots, dark patches on the skin, they will help with acne, and lighten acne scars.
Microdermabrasions, the kind of microdermabrasion I do at the office is a SilkPeel Dermalinfusion. This is a non-invasive skin rejuvenating procedure that exfoliates, evacuates, and can help a multitude of skin related concerns. The SilkPeel offers advanced skin care for just about every skin type and condition.
This procedure is a clinically proven way to resurface your skin. Whether you have problems with acne, aging, pigmentation, like sunspots or age spots, the SilkPeel delivers specially formulated solutions that penetrate deep into the skin without peeling or agitation. There is no downtime with the SilkPeel and can only be preformed in a doctors office.
Here is a short video of what to expect when you get a SilkPeel.
That leads us to Injectable’s. Muscle paralyzers like Botox and line fillers like Juvederm. For whatever reason people say they do not want to do any kind of injectables, but I will say, this method (with a solid at home skin regimen) can be the most affective. If you can’t move your forehead because you’ve had it botoxed, then you won’t make any wrinkles. If you already have prodominate wrinkling of the skin, fillers are really the only thing to fill those wrinkles in. I’m not saying to go crazy and look like those chicks on Bravo, but you can do it subtle enough that it gives you a fresher, well rested look. Everything in moderation people!!!!
That about sums it up! I hope you learned something and if you don’t wear sunscreen, after this I hope you start!
